Sh*t They Don't Tell Us: Kerry Washington

So I was home flipping through the channels and I came across the 44th annual NAACP awards. Now of course like many of you, I didn't even know when this was going to air. I actually never know. So anyway, I'm looking at the show and Instagramin' (no not a word) at the same time. So Steve Harvey get on stage and introduce Diahann Carroll (now I'm tuned in) and President and CEO of the NAACP Benjamin Todd Jealous. Dianne and Benjamin was there to present the President's Award, which gives recognition to those furthering the cause of civil rights and public service.

This year's NAACP President's Award went to the star of ABC's "Scandal", Ms Kerry Washington. Who by the way, is the first black woman to lead a role on network television in over 40 years. The last person to have done this was the lovely Ms Diahann Carroll in her role on NBC's "Julia" (1968-1971).

Watching this I learned Washington is far more than an actress, she's an hell of an activist. She worked diligently in both presidential campaigns. It was said that she gave one the most passionate speeches at the Democratic National Convention last year. Washington has also been appointed by President Obama on his Committee on the Arts and Humanities. In addition to all that has been mentioned, she is being an active member of the V-Counsel, which a group of advisors of  the non-profit organization V-Day. For those that may not know V-Day is a global movement to end violence against women and girls.

Now I personally never really paid any mind to Kerry Washington. Not that I had a personal dislike for her or anything it's just that I didn't hear much about her until the show "Scandal". Like, I just knew of her to be an actress (a good one) but that was all. I never heard a lot of hoopla surrounding her and after seeing this I don't know why. Women of this eminence should be celebrated and put on that "celebrity pedestal", you know that pedestal that is created by some behind scenes secret board member society.  You know that board that force feed us certain people leaving us no choice but to like them all the while we never have a clue as to why?! And all they do is tell us this person is has something special about them!

Well this lady here is truly special and the kind of woman, that we all can and should learn from. I know I did! Congratulations Ms Kerry Washington on all your achievements!

Below is the video of the very deserving Kerry Washington being presented with the President's Award at the 44th Annual NAACP Image Awards. I encourage that you watch it in it's entirety. Please feel free to comment below.
